In the sewing room, no. 2

This post should probably be subtitled “the one in which I caved” because in spite of my determination to resist, I jumped into the scrappy trip along this week with both feet.

I kept reading about how much fun these blocks are to make and late Saturday night I decided I’d better find out if it’s true.  It is.  I’m having so much fun with these.  In fact, it’s pretty much all I want to do.  While it meant I didn’t get other things done, I feel happy to have joined in.  I still wish I’d jumped into the Farmer’s Wife quilt along and I had a feeling I’d regret not joining this one.   Now I’ve got a pile of strips all cut up just waiting to become part of this quilt.

Lots of color, and I couldn’t be happier.  I did force myself to put them away while I work on my HST project, which has gone from a pile of squares to a bunch of strips laying on the bed, just waiting to be pieced together.

Terrible lighting, I know, but it was taken at night.  I hope to get this quilt top pieced in the next 24 hours.

And, of course, I’m working on my Scrappy Swoon :

scrappy swoon center star

This week I’ll keep working on these three projects, and I also hope to find time to start working on the sawtooth quilt I mentioned last week as well as finish up that Ellen’s Sewing basket block.  I also need to pull myself away from the very rewarding task of piecing and do some basting, quilting and binding.  Maybe if I let myself make another trip-along block every time I complete another task?  We’ll see how far I get!

Good luck to you in your projects.

In the sewing room, no. 1

This year I’ve decided to keep track of my 2013 sewing and quilting goals in a post separate from my yearly goals.  I have loved reading many of the link-up progress posts every Wednesday, so I’m going to join the party and post on Wednesdays.

Here’s what I’m working on right now:

arrow squares

I got a stack of 6 inch fabric squares last year at the Utah County Modern Quilt Group and we were challenged to make a half square triangle quilt out of it.  I decided to make a bunch of “arrows” with mine.  I need to get the rest of the blocks put together so I can lay them all out and see if what I have in my head will look right.

I also have a small stack of diamond strips waiting to become the next star in my Ellen’s Sewing Basket quilt.   Time to knock it out!

I cut squares a couple of weeks ago for a simple sawtooth quilt I want to make.  The colors are so happy, it’s a perfect project for winter.

Not pictured:

I need to piece a backing for my postage stamp quilt and FINALLY get that done.

I also need to get the binding on a quilt I made last year so it can be loved by my little guy.

And last, but certainly not least, I have work to do on the Scrappy Swoon Quilt Along I’m hosting.  I’m in love with this print I cut into for some of my background pieces:

I have three new quilts I’m anxious to start on, but until some of these projects are finished I’m going to resist.  I’m also trying hard to resist the Scrappy Trip-along frenzy, which looks like so much fun but which would also derail me from other projects.

And that’s it for the week.  If I make progress on all these I’ll be thrilled.

Thanks for visiting, Jennifer Linking to Freshly Pieced

Fireworks Quilt, block 1

I couldn’t resist the new Thimble Blossoms patterns , and Fireworks is first on the list.  I’m using prints from the Liberty of London Bloomsbury Gardens collection.  This first block has me smiling!

There are a lot of little flying geese in this quilt, so as I was sewing I just drew a second line on each little square, half an inch closer to the corner of the block.

After I sewed the pieces together I went back and sewed on the second line.  When I cut the corners for the flying geese, I had 32 tiny half square triangles as well!

Surely they’ll make something fun when I’m done.  If I do this for all 16 blocks, I’ll have more than 500 tiny squares to play with.

Can’t wait to make more…

Have a great day, Jennifer P.S. Have you seen the Scrappy Swoon Quilt Along that’s getting underway?  I hope you’ll join in!
