Small Packages

Have you ever picked a cherry off a tree And paused to really look To notice color, deep and red Or pale stem’s gentle curve?

Then popped it in your waiting mouth, And felt the flavor burst As teeth chew ’round the cherry stone Then cast it to the earth.

And if it happens as the sun shines down on your face, Or if you share a second one Spreading the sweet taste, Realize you’ve experienced One of God’s small packages If you’ve even had but one, Then He has given much.

Elk

Somehow, each time we visit my parents, we end up having some unusual experience with wildlife.  This last trip was no different.  Elk wandered into our camp, and they were breathtakingly beautiful.

They were completely uninterested in us, and paused to glance at us only occasionally.  They were only concerned in eating.  I was so amazed by them that I just kept taking pictures.  It was marvelous to be within a few yards of such majestic animals.

I love the way this one cocked his head to look at us.

This shot illustrates how close we were to them.

I marvel that I grew up in a place where sights like this are common.  I remember the morning I woke up early in the morning to complete a drawing assignment.  I opened the back curtains and saw a sight just like this in our backyard.  Guess what I drew that morning?

What a privilege to witness such beauty.

Sheep

I’ve been marveling lately at the blessing of living in an area which, although suburban, still retains much pastoral beauty.

These sheep live about 2 blocks from my house.  Most days I drive by, but today I couldn’t.  It was simply too beautiful.

This guy stood still as a statue, watching me.

This one sat contentedly.

A few wandered closer.

I loved the moss growing on the fence, the shelter of the tree overhead.

I laughed as this one went to scratch his back on a low branch.  The wad of wool indicated that he was not the first.

I find that the more I notice simple beauty in the world around me, the more alive I feel.  The more alive I feel, the more I notice.

And I can’t help but think, it really is a wonderful world.

What beautiful thing have you seen today?
