Sometimes Love is Heavy

double tulips

So often we think of love as something that makes life easier, better, happier, and it is.  Love unlocks goodness in every direction, pushing us upward like the flower reaching toward the light.

Sometimes it’s not so pretty.

This week I’m watching my parents struggle, and struggle well, under the terrible weight of love.

Sometimes our love for others ends up dragging us through all kinds of muck we never wanted, makes us lift and carry indefinitely burdens we didn’t seek, pushes us into experiences we sought to avoid.

It changes us in ways we worry about.

But, because we love, we have no choice but to get through the muck, keep carrying the burden, face the experience.

Somewhere in there, if we’re lucky, we remember One who did the same for us, who struggled under the terrible weight of a cross.

Love was heavy for Him, too.

He prayed for us, bled for us, died for us, and rose for us.

He offers help and strength when we’re crumbling beneath the weight.

***

As we reach for that strength it all becomes clear:

It isn’t the love that is heavy.  Life’s trials are heavy.

Love is what gets us through.

And we keep on.

Scrappy Swoon Quilt Along: binding

scrappyswoon

Welcome back to the last week of the Scrappy Swoon Quilt Along!  I have had so much fun sharing this quilt and seeing all the different color choices you’ve made.  So beautiful!

Now, without further ado, here is my finished quilt:

For this version of my Scrappy Swoon I chose a bright pink Lecien print for the binding.

I like the way it adds a thin pink line around the quilt, helping the pink in the quilt to stand out.  And the back:

Very simple, but again, I like the pink.

On my original Scrappy Swoon I used low volume whites for my binding, cutting a strip from 8 different fabrics.  I really loved that look as well.

To bind this quilt you will need 8 – width of fabric strips.  If you use a 2.5 inch binding, you will need 5/8 yard fabric.  Or just make it scrappy, using what you have on hand.   I love binding quilts.  It’s the last step before they get to be loved and used and admired.

So, if you haven’t already, finish up your quilt this week.  Next week we’ll have a link party here to share your finished quilt, which is your entry to win a bundle of Color Me Retro by Jeni Baker.  Many thanks to the Fat Quarter Shop for generously donating a prize!  The link party begins next Monday, March 11.

Going Coastal Quilt Top

With two little quilts finished up, it’s time for me to choose another finish it up goal for March.

This quilt top will be another quilt for one of my children.  Made with Emily Herrick’s Going Coastal fabrics (and a few of her second collection, whose name escapes me at the moment), it pays tribute to our family’s love for the beach.

The goal is to baste, quilt and bind it.  Nothing too difficult if I just make time.  I’m excited to finish it!

I’m submitting this as my goal for A Lovely Year of Finishes – goal setting party for March.
Do you have something you need to finish this month?  Head over and join in!  Submissions are open through March 7th.
