Mr. Wonderful

This post is a little late in coming, not because it hasn’t been in my heart, but just because our house is so full of LIVING that I blink and suddenly I’m behind in the chronicling of it all.

Remember the haircut ?  My husband felt so bad.  He didn’t mean for it to be so short, and he certainly didn’t enjoy my post about it all.  But because he is so wonderful, and because he loves me, he spent time the next day enabling a feature on my blog that I’d shown him recently on another blog.  He did it without my knowing, and I appreciate it.

Well, I just wanted to redeem myself a little.

This is my husband, Mr. Wonderful, holding our 8th baby minutes after she was born.

He really is the better half of our marriage.  He’s more patient than I am, more inclined to be positive and optimistic.   He knows how to diffuse anger with humor.  He’s quick to drop what he’s doing and connect with the children.  He consciously plans ways to spend time with each of them.  He’s also way more fun at bedtime.   And while he’s not perfect, I’d say he’s certainly several strides ahead of me.   It’s a good thing he’s still got a few rough spots to polish, because otherwise there would be no reason for him to put up with me.  Mostly, though, he’s perfect for me.

Last week he came home to a noisy house, a cluttered kitchen, hungry kids and a wife who was just sitting and typing.  Granted, I was typing something important to both of us in preparation for Family Night.  But there was an awful lot that was being left undone in order for me to do this one thing!  Well, he packed up some volunteers and headed out to get pizza (unasked).

When they came home, there was a large bundle of fresh carnations included in the package.  He was a little embarrassed that he’d just given me carnations but he’d had the input of a certain seven year old who was very passionate about it.

And to tell you the truth, I was actually really excited about the carnations.   There were enough of them that I could play and experiment a little with my flower arranging skills (translation:  see if my hands could actually produce the kind of thing I could picture).  Mr. Wonderful’s mother really likes roses.  I just like flowers.  Flowers of all kinds, and especially flowers that are in season.

Well, we ate the pizza, had Family Night, put the kids to bed and then I got to work on the carnations.  (I’m sorry I didn’t take pictures.  I really just needed the experience of being creative.)  I started by separating them by color, and then went on a hunt for small containers to place them in.

I started with the bright red carnations and three little ceramic baskets that I picked up on clearance after Easter a few years ago.

Funny that it’s taken me so long to do with them what I pictured when I purchased them.

Next I chose a silver sugar dish and the bright pink carnations.

I like the juxtaposition of elegant silver and the lowly carnation.

Another silver dish and the crimson flowers.

And finally, the variegated flowers all together.  Initially I had them separated into two colors, but I liked the way they looked together.  Again, I chose a silver bowl.

When I was done and the counter was once again clean, there I stood with 6 flower arrangements from one big bouquet!  Not only had he brought me flowers, he’d also brought me an opportunity to be creative, which happens to be the #1 way for me to unwind and feel good about life again.  The trickiest part of all was just choosing where to put them!

Every time I’ve looked at them for the past week, I’ve had to smile a little at life and at how grateful I am for him.  Thanks, sweetie.  I love you.

Dining Room: Victory Claimed or Defeat Admitted?

Almost two years ago, a day or two before Thanksgiving, I slapped some coats of glossy black paint on an old table I’d picked up at a thrift store.  I remember that it was RIGHT before the holiday because one, I was 8 months pregnant and trying to paint was not the most comfortable experience and two, I remember asking my Dad to finish the project for me after they got to town for the holiday.

It all worked out just fine.  We used folding chairs around the table for Thanksgiving dinner that year.  Then, over the next 8 months or so, I started collecting chairs with a shield back.  For a while I had the serendipitous experience of stumbling upon them all over the place.  Before I knew it, I had 8 of them, and I don’t think I paid more than $20 for any of them.

But they were old, the seats were covered with a variety of garish fabrics, and all of them were stained brown.  Remember, my dining room table is black.  So  they went to the basement for me to refinish them.

Fast forward to last week, and they were sitting in the very same spots I put them in when I purchased them.  The only change was in the boxes that had since been stacked on top of them.

Knowing what kind of crowd we were going to have in town and around for the weekend, I decided it was time to get the dining room chairs out.   I picked up some cheap slipcovers from Bed Bath & Beyond and tried them on.  Not the best fit, because the backs of my chairs aren’t rectangular, but a fit nevertheless.  So the covers went on, the bows were tied, and felt placed  on the bottom of each leg.

Here is the final product:

You know, it’s actually very pretty, and I love having chairs around the table.  They look elegant with the covers on them.  Good thing, because they’ll probably stay that way for a while.

Here, then, is the question.  Did I claim a victory or admit defeat?
Victory:  I have dining room chairs around my table.
Defeat:  In bringing the chairs to the dining room in this condition I might be conceding that they will never be refinished.

The answer, I suppose, could be both.  For now I’ll call it a victory, and only time will tell if it is, indeed, defeat.  For now, I’m a step closer to the dining room I want.

Organize a Desk

For months, my daughter’s desk has been driving me crazy.  It’s always so covered with stuff that there is no point in having a desk.

I think that secretly I’m probably inclined to be a neat freak, but having 7 children really curbs my opportunities to enforce that kind of lifestyle.  I’ve concluded it’s a good thing; probably God’s way of rescuing me from developing OCD.  Still, neat and tidy goes a long way toward making a happy mother in this house.   We all have piles sometimes, myself included, but I really strive for some sense of order.  With this desk, I’ve tried multiple ways of encouraging her to keep things a little bit neater, but all to no avail.

Here is my little office space.  We have a room in our home that doubles as a guest room and my own space.

I love it.

I really love the fact that my rack is filled with containers that are whimsical and fun to look at, which are filled with supplies I use all the time for sewing, wrapping gifts, paper projects, etc.  I can get things out and put them away in a matter of seconds.  I love the easy access, the fact that I can store an awful lot in such a small space and in plain view.  Organizing my spot like this was one of the best ideas  I had when we moved into this house.

The thought occurred to me the other day that perhaps my daughter would like to have a space like mine.
(I was pretty sure she’d go for it, given the amount of time she spends going through my stuff.)

After searching high and low, I finally got my hands on another baker’s rack like the one I already have.
We cleared the space and got busy.  All you need are two basic things:  the rack or shelves or whatever you’re going to put things on and a variety of cute containers for holding stuff in.  Pretty simple.
IMG_5171 (Large)
Here’s a sampling of the containers we used.
IMG_5170 (Large)
My theory with the containers is the cheaper the better.  The yellow bowl I’ve had for years but now it has a crack in it so I never use it in the kitchen.  Then there is the ceramic bowl with holes that I picked up on clearance after Easter.  The blue bucket was the same.  The blue wood paper organizer was just kicking around the house.  That’s pretty much what we did:  we walked around the house and looked for things we could re-purpose to make for an interesting display.  We found a glass candle holder in the pantry to use, a small white flower pot for pencils and pens, and so forth. You get the picture.  This was not an expensive undertaking.  But my theory is that the whole point is to be creative and find ways to encourage her to take care of her space in a cute, fun, but tidy way.

We started by sorting like objects into their own containers and began placing just a couple of things here and there.
IMG_5172 (Large)
We made room for her jewelry box and cd player, and kept filling it in.

The finished product:
IMG_5174 (Large)
She’s got everything she needs within arm’s reach:  paper, markers, pencils, pens, stapler, glue, books, music, and so forth.  She likes it because it is cute and  makes her feel grown up.  I like it because she can see everything she has, use it and put it away easily, and there is actually a white desk underneath it all for her to work at!  I also like that there’s room for us to add more containers as needed.  And, at the date of this writing, her desk has been clean for almost two weeks.  Now THAT is impressive.  A ten year old girl with a clean desk… this could be a world record in the making!

Using a baker’s rack like this can be a fun way to organize a space.  As I said, I’ve loved it in my office and am hopeful about the long-term potential for my daughter.  I also have a smaller one that I hung above my bathtub to help organize that space, too.
IMG_5303 (Large)
Honestly, they’re cool racks for a kitchen and someday I’d love to have one displaying pretty plates, but I love their potential in other ways, too.  Kitchen, office, bedroom, bathroom, and think how cute it would be on a potting table storing gardening supplies!  These racks are awesome because they’re so versatile.

As for the desk, mission accomplished.   Hooray!
