Seaside and Songbird

In a moment of weakness recently I treated myself to two fat quarter bundles.

The first is Seaside by October Afternoon.  Available in three colorways, there are a number of great stash prints in this collection.  Like the Vintage Summer prints I purchased a couple of months ago, they’re smaller in scale than some of the large prints I’m often drawn to.  I have a feeling I’m going to wish I had more than a fat quarter in many of these prints.  I’m dreaming of a simple beachy quilt from this bundle, especially when I look at this print:

It kind of tugs at my heart to see those children playing, perhaps because mine are beginning to exit that glorious phase and I’m not ready for it, not one bit.

The second bundle is Songbird by Carina Gardner.  Also available in three colorways, this will be really fun to work with.  No surprises here; I love the flowers and the birds.  A very happy stack of fabric.  I think my favorite is this one:

In my head I have all kinds of time to cut into these gems and make something, but in reality it might take a while.  No matter, they’re sitting on my sewing table looking pretty.  I’m not sure if I like them because they’re the only thing in my life that seems to be neat and tidy right now, or because they hold the promise of something wonderful when things calm down.  Either way I think they’re beautiful!

Rainbow Road Table Runner

I finally got around to finishing the Rainbow Road table runner that I pieced back in April.

This project was a great way to get out of my comfort zone with improv curves and with a very busy fabric selection.  I’m happy with the project both because it was a chance to learn new skills and also because I like the final product.

I quilted it with {somewhat} straight lines and am pleased with the overall effect.  It’s such a happy, cheery thing to look at!

For the backing I used a long piece of Anna Griffin fabric I had from another project and the binding is a blue floral stripe which I wasn’t sure about but ended up using.

It’s finished and sitting on my kitchen table where it looks great!

England Swings Flag Quilt top

I finished up this happy quilt top recently.  It came about in funny way.  Like so many others, I enjoyed watching from afar some of the celebrations surrounding the Queen’s Jubilee recently.  I’ve loved all the pictures of the Union Jack and seeing the Queen in her aqua suit.   I’ve thought many times about making a Union Jack quilt but never really looked into it.  All of a sudden, however, I was dying to make one.  I looked around for a tutorial but wasn’t sure I wanted to use the one I found, and all the quilts I love seem to come from the same pattern which is NOT available in pdf format.  So, my hopes of quickly putting together a block or two were quickly dashed and I shelved the idea once more.

Then I remembered a stack of fabric sitting in my drawer.  The collection is called England Swings and it’s even prettier in person than it looks here.  I cut my own 2 1/2 inch strips to make a custom jelly roll and used the Flags Quilt pattern by American Jane.

You’ll see some Flower Sugar in there, as well as a bit of Jennifer Paganelli.  The rest is all designed by Rebekah Merkle, and if I remember correctly it was inspired by her life in Great Britain.  I think that the pattern and the fabric make a nice pair.

I love the slightly nautical feel, the crisp colors, the mostly red, white and blue color scheme with enough yellow and green thrown in to mix things up.  I’m so glad I finally got this fabric out of my drawer and did something with it!

It’s off to the quilter and if I’m really lucky I’ll be able to finish it before the 4th of July.  I’d love to lay on this one while we watch fireworks.
