Repurposed Topiary Form

I love it when utility, organization and creativity combine to solve a problem in my life!

That’s what happened today when I put together this little reminder tree for our family.

I’ve been hunting for ways to control the paper clutter that enters my house with my children each day.  I have a file system that I use for the big papers, which works fine if I just deal with the stack consistently.  The little papers are another story.

Most of them come in the form of reminders.  Reminders for Scouts, food assignments, equipment lists for campouts, Activity days reminders, gymnastics info.  Many of the important little details that I MUST see in order for things to run smoothly around here come into my home on 1/4 sheet of paper.

Those papers get lost in the big ones.   I hate it when I find a reminder, too late.  So I’ve been looking for ways to keep track of the little papers.  The fridge is out because too many people like to take the magnets to do whatever with, or rearrange things for fun, and so forth.  My kitchen is very open and all the wall space consists of windows and cabinets (sigh…no awesome chalkboard or bulletin board in my kitchen’s future).   I wanted it in the kitchen, however, because it is the hub of our family activity.

In my basement today my eyes settled on an old topiary form and a light bulb turned on.  I’m going vertical with the reminders!  I gave myself 7 minutes to complete this project (including pictures) from start to finish because I had to pick children up from school.

I took the form and set it in an IKEA pot that was in my pantry.  I weighted it with a bag of dry beans and then filled in the top with some fabric scraps.

The ball on top seemed a bit bare, so I added a couple of birds for fun.

I cut a length of several bright and cheery ribbons (it’s raining today and I need some color to lift my spirits) and tied them in a simple knot at the base of the ball.  It’s ready to go.

A quick collection run around the house turned up some clothespins and we’re in business!  I now have a place to clip those little pieces of paper that are important for about 24 hours at a time before they’re replaced by another.

Amazingly, I didn’t have a single reminder paper for my children that’s current.  Last week was spring break and I guess nobody wanted to bother reminding us about things until after it ended so currently it only holds a couple of coupons I don’t want to forget.

I have high hopes that this little tree will help all of us keep track of those frustrating but essential little papers.  The children were really excited about it when they came home from school.  I’m hoping that they’ll think it’s fun to clip their papers on, and it will be easy to see at a glance which papers are no longer needed.  When a clothespin is not in use it can be clipped wherever, on the ball, the trunk, or even around the edge of the pot.

So there you have it.  Seven minutes to a solution.    It now sits on my kitchen counter, cheerfully awaiting my first reminder of the week (please don’t let us forget the Pinewood Derby later this month).   I was thinking that this could be used for displaying other things, like photos, postcards or greeting cards.  Do you have any other ideas?  What do you think?  What would you use it for?

Thanks for stopping by.  Have a great day.

Life’s Journey quilt

I’m almost finished with another quilt top.

Life's Journey quilt top

The pattern is Life’s Journey by Cotton Way.

When I first saw a picture of this quilt I was smitten.  I’ve been wanting to make it for a while now.

The background I chose is a Kona cotton, the color “aqua”.  I love this color and am pretty sure I’ll need to use it again.  I finally cut into my Rouenneries layer cake for this one, along with several wovens from that same collection.  I also added the fat quarters I purchased from the French General Christmas line and a number of other prints from my stash.

Life's Journey quilt top 2

I’m very pleased with how the colors work together, and I love the movement in this quilt.   I ordered the fabric for the borders, but it hasn’t arrived yet.  As soon as it gets here, I’ll add borders and figure out how to quilt it.

On another quilting note, I had planned to take my Wild Thing quilt to the quilter, but decided not to.  I promised myself that I would be patient this year and start quilting my own quilts as much as possible so as to make my hobby more affordable.  So, this week I’m going to pin it and get started on it.  I haven’t done it yet because I keep waffling on how to quilt it.  (Don’t worry, it will be simple.  My skills are sorely lacking in this area!)  Wish me luck.

So, I begin another week with high ambitions.  We’ll see if I’m able to fit any of it in.  It’s worth a try!

Hope your day is great!

One Step Report #14

Once again, here I am with my weekly progress report on my goal for 2010.  One Step is a promise to myself that, instead of measuring myself by all the things I DON’T get done, I will focus each day on the little things that I AM able to do.  I keep a journal, recording the things I’ve accomplished at the end of each day.  I promised myself  one step each day toward a better me and a stronger family.  Anything more than that is icing on the cake.  This process is doing something interesting for me.   In addition to helping me overcome my tendency to live in the gap between my expectations and my performance, it is also helping me to recognize that real change takes time.  For the first time in my life, I feel like time is on my side.  Oh, I’m not wishing to rush through life, but I recognize that each week lived is a week of learning and hopefully a week of moving “ever forward, but slowly” to where I feel I need to be.    At the end of the year, I hope to look back and discover that I’ve become a happier, healthier, more balanced me.

Ok, here I go.  This week’s steps:  71 steps.  I’ll take it.

Highlights:

1.  After spending several hours in doctor’s offices, we found a great specialist who was able to confirm that my daughter’s ankle is NOT chipped, and that the soft tissue injury should heal well on its own.  Relief!  (I’m hoping that my son’s finger injury will end happily, simply and inexpensively also.)

2.  I finished a book and started another one that I’m enjoying.

3.  A hard thing happened this week.  I had a lot of thinking to do.  I feel like I’ve sorted through it well, learned positive lessons about how I can improve, and managed not to harbor hard feelings as a result.  Victory!

4.  Another brother and his boys spent a few days visiting us.  I had some great conversations with him, and loved having his sons here with us.  I especially loved reading them to sleep a couple of times.  A special memory for me.

5.  On Monday when my parents were still in town I jumped in the car with them and we went to a couple of fun shops.  I can’t remember the last time it was just me with my Mom and Dad, and I enjoyed it.

6.  I tried a new recipe and shared another one with friends.

7.  I’ve been focusing on being aware of my feelings, and trying not to let my heart shrivel up and withdraw when I feel tired, sad, discouraged, stressed, etc.  Today at Church I was having one of those mornings when so many little things go wrong that you feel like a loser, and I was tempted to just let my heart shrivel into self-protect mode.  I recognized what was happening and forced myself to open my heart, engage in what was going on around me, talk to the people sitting nearby and just try to learn how they were really doing.  It worked!  I learned some things I didn’t know, chatted with a friend I haven’t seen enough lately, connected with two women I really like, and discovered that two other women I know share a hobby:  quilting.  Hooray for having an open heart!

8.  I wrote some thank you notes, wrote in one daughter’s journal, and went back and filled in the gaps in our family guest book.

9.  Last night my husband and I went to dinner with some friends we really admire.  We then took them to this year’s BYU Ballroom Dance performance.  Wow.  We’ve attended this event every year for 8 or 9 years now, and love it.  This year’s performance did not disappoint.

This week was spring break, and we’ve also had company in town for 9 of the last 10 days.  I don’t think any of us feel ready for what’s about to hit tomorrow morning, so my last step for the week is to swallow the stress, go to bed and face it in the morning!

I hope the coming week is full of sunshine and purposeful steps in the direction of your dreams!
