Beach Porch

Decorating

Remember the over-sized sand dollar I mentioned earlier this week?  And the beach house I dream of decorating?

Well, in that house I would most definitely include a porch that looks like this:


That blue packing crate is absolutely amazing!  And the pillows, well, I’d like to spend an afternoon there.  The pink stripe and blue and white zebra prints are my favorites.  I’m sure the sand dollar could be incorporated easily.

It’s been sunny for two days in a row here.  I’m praying it holds.  After all the gray we’ve had  I can’t get enough of color.

Yellow Chevron Crib Skirt

When I made a yellow chevron pillow for this room , I had no idea how much I would like it.  It was just one of those happy things.  As I’ve continued to work on the room with a few minutes here and there, I’ve decided to use yellow throughout the bedroom as an accent.


I ordered more yellow chevron fabric, and made a crib skirt.  I’m in love with how it turned out.  It’s unexpected.  It also adds a modern, grown up feeling to the room, which is one of my goals .


I dug through my vintage linens and brought out a pink cameo pillowcase which I love.  It fits her personality and tastes so well.   It sits beneath the artwork she and her older sister drew and taped up together.  The pennant pillow is a favorite of hers, as well as the flower garden quilt I made before she was born.


There is something wonderful about creating things for young children, and watching their delight in receiving them.

Above the crib I hung my vintage metal wreath .  I couldn’t bear to pack it away after Christmas, but didn’t want it in the kitchen.  I think it’s found it’s permanent home.  It’s one of a kind, adds dimension and is perfect for over a little girl’s bed.


The room is coming along in snatches of time here and there.  I have three DIY projects to find time for, and then it will be done.   I’m pleased with the direction it’s taken, and have also been thrilled to see how much easier it is for the girls and I to keep their room clean.  It’s true that loving the way a room looks encourages better habits.

But for all the fun I’m having with this space, this might be the best detail of all:


Two young children playing happily together.  Oh, how I love these moments.  They make me feel like the world is going to be ok.

Quilt Along Blocks

Quilting and Sewing

Two months ago I made the first block for a quilt along I’d begun.  I saw the second block and got cold feet.  The block is great; I just wasn’t confident it would work well with the fabric I’m using.  A couple of weeks later I checked back and saw another block that I wasn’t sure I wanted to make with this fabric.  Cold feet once more.

And so my lone completed block has sat, for two months, on top of a pile of neatly folded fabric, looking at me every time I walk into my studio.   How’s that for being a finisher?  I know, disgusting.

Well, all the blocks are now available and the layout of the quilt has also been unveiled.  I’ve decided to finish the quilt.  I’m going to make 14 of the blocks, skipping the two I was unsure of.   Once they’re all made I’ll decide what to do; either make the blocks I’m hesitant about, choose two favorite block designs and make duplicates in different colors, or design something different.  I’ll work it out when I’ve got the remaining blocks complete.

I’ve finished four of them:


This block was a lot of fun to make and came together much more quickly than I anticipated.  I learned a new technique for making flying geese which was kind of fun.  I’m not sure I’m smart enough to figure out the math well enough to design or cut a quilt using the technique, but I’d really like to learn.


This block I changed a bit.  The design is supposed to have the red polka dot in the center, but I wanted to incorporate one of the large red roses so I swapped it in.  I’m not sure about this block, but my three year old princess likes it best.


This block was a lot of fun to make.  I enjoyed using the same print in four colorways for the patchwork squares.  The dark gray polka dot is from the Summertime collection.  I’ve used this gray dot to bind a quilt with and it’s one of my current favorites.


This pinwheel block might be my favorite.  I really like pinwheels and I love the way the blue really pops.  So pretty.

Now five blocks are complete and I only have 11 more to make!  (so much for my grand plans to stay caught up).  I’m hoping to complete them quickly and see how the project turns out.
