Life’s Journey quilt

I’m almost finished with another quilt top.

The pattern is Life’s Journey by Cotton Way.

When I first saw a picture of this quilt I was smitten. I’ve been wanting to make it for a while now.

The background I chose is a Kona cotton, the color “aqua”. I love this color and am pretty sure I’ll need to use it again. I finally cut into my Rouenneries layer cake for this one, along with several wovens from that same collection. I also added the fat quarters I purchased from the French General Christmas line and a number of other prints from my stash.

I’m very pleased with how the colors work together, and I love the movement in this quilt. I ordered the fabric for the borders, but it hasn’t arrived yet. As soon as it gets here, I’ll add borders and figure out how to quilt it.

On another quilting note, I had planned to take my Wild Thing quilt to the quilter, but decided not to. I promised myself that I would be patient this year and start quilting my own quilts as much as possible so as to make my hobby more affordable. So, this week I’m going to pin it and get started on it. I haven’t done it yet because I keep waffling on how to quilt it. (Don’t worry, it will be simple. My skills are sorely lacking in this area!) Wish me luck.

So, I begin another week with high ambitions. We’ll see if I’m able to fit any of it in. It’s worth a try!

Vintage Sailboat Quilt

In honor of National Quilt Day today, I thought I’d post pictures of my favorite vintage quilt.

This quilt is my favorite for so many reasons! I purchased it about 3 1/2 years ago on Ebay. It was one of those love at first sight moments. It’s made with my favorite colors: red, white and blue (two shades of blue!) and depicts one of my favorite scenes, sailboats on open water. I love the symmetry of it and how the overall composition of the quilt works together so beautifully.

There are also many little details that I appreciate about it. I love the applique work that makes up each sailboat, and how there are little white waves or ripples in the water embroidered in white on the dark blue.

I also love the quilting on this quilt. Done by hand, it is quilted in squares set on their corners with some gorgeous little floral medallions inset in the light blue panels.

The borders are also fun. The white border is quilted to be a rope.

This quilt is lovely, but is also worn. It is also very thin. As you can see from the pictures of the entire quilt, there are sailboats that are almost completely detached (I guess I should mend them!) and places where the fabric, particularly the white fabric is threadbare or worn with small holes. Still, I love it so much. It’s a piece that makes me feel both happy and calm when I see it. It reminds me of trips to the ocean, of my favorite holiday (4th of July) and of cool breezes. Truly, it’s one of a kind, and I’m so happy that it lives at my house!

Wild Thing Quilt Top

My tidy little stack of fabric has been transformed into this:

The pattern is Wild Thing by Thimble Blossoms, and the fabric I used is Verna by Kate Spain for Moda. It’s still in need of borders, but I can’t remember the last time a quilt top made me smile like this one does.

Let me just say that I LOVE this pattern. And let me also say that the Verna line is GORGEOUS.   It just might be my new favorite. Here’s a peek at some of the fabulous prints in this collection.

I love the tulip pattern, and the stripes (above) are just plain happy. That pink swirly print (below) is called Breezy Budding and yes, it’s as wonderful as it looks. The two-tone green print below the pink comes in several different colors and I really like it.

This collection has the most wonderful selection of both small and large scale prints. I love the variety of colors, several shades of green and blue mixed with bright pink, peach, yellow and brown. A very well-rounded collection. There are about 8 different prints that I looked at and thought how well they would go with other collections and projects.   I love how all of them look against the Kona White. (Happy sigh.)

In spite of my better judgment, my heart keeps saying to me “I need some.” Seriously, I’d love to have a fat quarter of every piece in the collection, but this quilt will have to do. My goal is to USE my fabric this year and not just accumulate it. This afternoon I’m headed to choose borders for this quilt.   I can hardly wait!
